One of the best things about type 2 diabetes is that itcan be controlled by diet.  However thisis also one of the worst things, and the initially set up of a diet fordiabetic patient management often becomes a source of friction between thediabetic and the doctor.  The question arises,is there a diet for diabetic patient management that actually works as well asone that is acceptable to both doctor and patient.

Establishing the best diet for diabetic patient care isoften a balancing act for the doctor. Most doctors recognise the role which diet plays in diabetes management, and so they want to restrict the intake of potentially damaging food for theirpatient.  For this reason, most doctorswould love to see their diabetic patients completely eliminate all high sugarfoods from their diet, as well as alcohol and high fatty foods.  However, the total elimination number ofthese substances is most often met with a great deal of resistance from thediabetics themselves.

Diabetics argue that, in addition to controlling theirdisease, they also need to have some room for enjoyment, and they actually havesome validity in this!  The best diet fordiabetic management is one that the patient will obey and stick to, and so inorder to have such a diet doctors need to work with the patients and providedietary restrictions that the patient feels they can handle.

So, the very best diet for diabetic control is ultimatelygoing to be the one that is adhered to, and given the amount of resistance mostpatients have to the total elimination of everything that they hold dear in theway of food, a degree of compromise is needed to obtain a Diet for diabeticpatient management that actually works.

The big word at all for doctor-patient relationships isthe word “moderation”.  It is a fareasier task, and a much more reasonable request, to ask your diabetic patientto moderate their intake of substances, rather than totally eliminatethem.  One of the most difficult areasshall in this regard has to do with the consumption of alcohol.  Many diabetic patients enjoy alcohol, andwhile the doctor may be tempted to completely eliminate alcohol from the diet, there often is areas of compromise can be reached, depending on the severity ofthe diabetes.  A diabetic patient can beencouraged will eliminate spirits and full strength beer, but still be allowedto have a glass of wine with their friends.  However, the patient needs to be faithful intheir commitment as well!

There is no doubt that the best management is the onethat will be adhered to by the patient!  Whilean elimination diet may be preferable to the doctor, a strict diet which is completelyignored is utterly useless in the treatment of this disease.  Therefore cooperation between the doctor andthe diabetic patient is essential to establish a diet for diabetic patient carethat actually works, achieving real lifestyle changes while still allowing thepatient some scope to enjoy the finer things in life.
